Offshore Location

Offshore location refers to any location which is located outside the relevant country. For example, the British would consider the Cayman Islands or the Maldives to be offshore locations.

Many companies often tend to open up branches in offshore locations for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • Gaining tax exemptions due to the lax laws in the offshore location.
  • Being able to avail resources which are present in the offshore location but are not present in the home country or the country of origin.
  • They can operate under a legal framework which is comparatively more relaxed than the framework of their own country.

Hence, it is no surprise to notice the boost in popularity of offshore locations throughout the world. In addition, companies often end up opting for offshore locations due to the abundance of cheap labor in such areas who are willing to work for low wages and long hours.

However, offshore locations have also been recently associated with the stigma of illegal activities. Many branches in offshore countries have been accused of indulging in illegal activities such as money laundering. Of course, while some instances of such activities may occur, that definitely does not mean that offshore locations are not to be trusted.
